  MINOR LEAGUE SALARY:

First year maximum salary:  $1,100 per month

A player must be placed on the team’s 40-man roster or be subject to the Rule 5 draft at the end of his fourth season (if signed at age 19 or higher) or fifth season (if signed at age 18 or lower).

Salary for first year on 40-man roster:

2011:   $32,500 + cost of living adjustment

 

Salary for second year on 40 man roster or if one or more days of major league service time:

Minor league salary must be at least 60% of the player’s combined minor league and major league salary in the preceding season.

   

  MAJOR LEAGUE SALARY:

2009:   $400,000

2010:   $400,000

2011:   $400,000 + cost of living adjustment

 

Teams can renew a player’s contract at the major league minimum until the player is eligible for arbitration.  Teams may renew a player’s contract above the minimum out of good faith and to generate goodwill.  The record is $900,000, received by Albert Pujols in 2003 and Ryan Howard in 2007. 

 

Players are eligible for salary arbitration when they have three or more years of service time and less than six years of service time.   Players ranked in the top 17% of service time (usually around 2 years and 120 days) who have at least two years and less than three years of major league service time who accumulated at least 86 days of major league service time in the preceding season are also eligible for arbitration as “Super Twos.”

  

Players are eligible for free agency when they reach six years of major league service time.

 

The average major league salary in 2006 was $2,699,292.
